Stop 1 - Naracoorte Caves
Kick off your day with a scenic drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Naracoorte Caves (approximately 30 mins from Penola). Upon entering the Naracoorte Victoria Fossil Cave, you'll immediately be awestruck by the natural beauty that surrounds you. The cave's chambers are adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, creating a surreal atmosphere. Soft lighting enhances the features of the cave while maintaining its natural ambience.
As you progress deeper into the cave, the guide will point out the areas where significant fossil discoveries have been made. You'll see the remains of long-extinct animals, including giant marsupials, ancient reptiles, and even the bones of the extinct marsupial lion. The guide will explain the significance of each fossil and its contribution to our understanding of prehistoric life in the region.
Stop 2 - Ottelia Coonawarra
We'll then head towards Coonawarra and your stunning dining experience with Ottelia for lunch. The menu at Ottelia showcases the best of regional produce, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. The talented chefs create dishes that are a celebration of flavours, presenting a fusion of modern Australian cuisine with international influences. Whether you're a meat lover or a vegetarian, there are options to cater to all dietary preferences. Each dish at Ottelia is expertly prepared and beautifully presented, showcasing the culinary skills of the kitchen. The menu changes seasonally to make the most of fresh, local produce, ensuring that every visit offers a new and exciting dining experience. You will also enjoy a tasting of the Ottelia range of wines and we have no doubt you'll find something that suits your taste.
Stop 3 - Coonawarra Railway Siding
After lunch. you'll visit the Coonawarra Railway Siding for a must-have photo opportunity while we run through the importance of the railway line and how it opened up our region to the world. The railway siding was established in the late 19th century when the railway line was extended to the Coonawarra region. It played a vital role in transporting goods, including wine barrels, grapes, and other agricultural produce, to and from the area. The railway provided a crucial link between Coonawarra and the broader South Australian rail network, facilitating the distribution of goods to markets across the country. Make sure you grab a "selfie at the siding" before we continue our big day out!
Stop 4 - Wynns Coonawarra Estate
We then head to where it literally all started in Coonawarra back in 1896. Wynns Coonawarra (as it's been known since 1951) was our first winery built by founder, John Riddoch. You'll be welcomed at the door of the historic "Gables" with a glass of the flagship Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon and taken on a private tour of the cellar door. We'll then head down to the original wine cellar where you'll be treated to a private tasting of the Wynns Coonawarra Icon series of wines. In this amazing setting, learn more about the rich history of Wynns as you sample the top wines that Wynns has to offer including the John Riddoch Cabernet, Michael Shiraz, & other single vineyard classics from this Coonawarra icon.
Stop 5 - Parker Estate
We have something special for you to enjoy at Parker Estate in Coonawarra. Yes, it is a very famous winery known for its cool climate Cabernet and Shiraz but it also has three distinct Gins on offer. The Parker team will have a delicious Gin flight waiting for you on arrival. Be guided through a vertical tasting of the Signature Dry Gin, Cabernet Gin, and an aromatic Rose Gin. Each has a distinct flavour and the perfect use of botanicals and we know at least one will become your new favourite.
Stop 6 - Penola - Private Kangaroo Sanctuary *
Our last stop of the day is something truly special! You will visit a private property in Penola that contains its own wildlife sanctuary that looks after kangaroos who have experienced the loss of their parents and cannot survive in the wild without assistance from the incredible owners of the property. During your visit, you may have the opportunity to feed kangaroos under the guidance of the staff. This hands-on experience allows you to offer kangaroos specially prepared food while learning about their dietary needs and habits. Feeding sessions often create memorable interactions, as kangaroos approach you with curiosity and gentle behaviour. As you explore the sanctuary, you'll likely encounter kangaroos in various stages of development, from joeys (baby kangaroos) to fully grown adults. Observing their social interactions, including their hopping, grazing, and grooming behaviours, provides a deeper understanding of their natural lifestyle.
*This experience takes place on private property and is not open to the general public. This component of the tour is subject to availability and will be substituted for another activity if unavailable.
